Drug overdose is the leading cause of injury death in the United States, causing
more deaths than motor vehicle deaths, and the numbers continue to rise. The
majority of these deaths involve prescription pain medication of the opiate type,
such as oxycodone (OxyContin, Roxys, and Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin),
and illegal opiates such as Heroin.
Many of these deaths could have been avoided if the proper medication and
training on how to use it was available.
The Resource Training & Counseling Center @ Christopher’s Reason of Staten
Island is offering our Opioid Overdose Prevention Program. The training is free
and open to not only providers, but to the community, such as parents, friends &
family of individuals who have a history of opiate abuse.
• Attendees will receive Overdose Prevention Kits, containing Naloxone, a
medication administered through a nasal spray that reverses the effects of
opiate drugs.
Attendees will learn:
• Overdose prevention strategies
• How to recognize an overdose.
• Overdose response, including: stimulation, calling 911, rescue breathing,
and naloxone administration.
• Aftercare information
• How to build your own overdose kits and where to get the supplies and
naloxone.
